How and why do languages evolve and change over time? How are languages related to each other?
At Saint David’s, boys explore language as an evolving expression of culture. Beginning with Spanish in Pre-K and expanding to Latin in fifth grade and French in sixth, they examine the roots and relationships among languages—gaining insight into how language shapes and reflects human history.
How does cultural context, along with verbal and non-verbal language, influence effective communication?
In sixth-grade Spanish, boys explore Peruvian culture by researching traditional recipes and creating cooking videos narrated in Spanish. This immersive project deepens both language skills and cultural awareness, showing how communication is shaped by context and culture.
How does knowing my language proficiency help me to grow as a language learner?
Using ACTFL proficiency guidelines and “can-do” statements, boys assess their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills—setting goals and tracking their progress along the way. This reflective process helps them understand their growth and take greater ownership of their learning.
