Our application for the 2026-27 school year is now open.

Language Immersion

When boys learn new words, they gain new worlds.

Through the study of both modern and classical languages, the boys at Saint David’s come to see the world more clearly and engage with it more fully. Rooted in our classical tradition, language learning here is an immersion not only in vocabulary and grammar, but in culture, history, and perspective. It sharpens the intellect, cultivates empathy, and prepares boys to speak thoughtfully across borders—geographic, cultural, and generational.

Spanish and French

Spanish from the Start

Every boy at Saint David’s begins learning Spanish in Pre-Primary (Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten)—and from the start, it’s immersive. Each day, boys are surrounded by the language and introduced to the many cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. They don’t just memorize vocabulary—they live the language. Lessons align with topics from other disciplines, so the vocabulary and ideas they’re learning feel familiar, connected, and meaningful.

French in Grade Six

In Grade Six, boys choose whether to continue with Spanish or begin studying French. As they progress in their study of the language, boys are able to clearly communicate their ideas orally and in writing.

Two Weeks in Spain

After years of Spanish in the classroom, rising eighth graders travel to Salamanca, Spain, for two unforgettable weeks of intensive study and cultural exchange. There, language comes alive as they attend classes at Colegio Salamanca, explore the city, and, of course, find time for soccer with local children. By navigating daily life in Spanish, boys return with stronger skills, deeper bonds, and a broader view of the world.

Latin

The Power of Latin

Most students in Grades Five through Eight study two languages—one modern (Spanish or French) and one classical (Latin)—deepening both linguistic fluency and cultural understanding. The benefits of Latin are well known at Saint David’s. It strengthens vocabulary and grammar in English, lays a foundation for all Romance languages, and cultivates habits of clear thinking and close attention. More than an academic exercise, Latin builds cognitive power—training the mind to reason carefully, solve problems, and think critically across disciplines.

Recognition

Global Seal of Biliteracy

The Global Seal of Biliteracy offers our students the opportunity to earn international recognition for their language proficiency—an achievement honored by colleges, universities, and employers around the world. Since joining the program in 2023, 22 Saint David’s boys have earned the distinction.
